NEW VACT BUILDING LANDSCAPING WORK DAY IS SATURDAY OCTOBER 2!
Please get into your gardens this week and thin those perennials! We would love for you to share your beautiful plants with VACT! Give us ANYTHING you don't want--we will find a good home for it in OUR very own VACommunityT garden. We have both full sun and shaded (north facing) beds.
We will be working on the landscaping and planting the perennial beds (and thank Dave Watts for helping BIGTIME) all day on Saturday, October 2, from 9 AM to 4 PM and we will have one of those famous VACT picnic lunches too. Bring your shovels (there will also be washed gravel to haul), wheelbarrows, spades, trowels, watering cans, gloves and strong bodies so we can get it all done. And we probably can use a couple folks with hammers and drills to help put up the fun old set pieces among the rocks, too.
Label your perennials with your name, name of plant, expected blooming time, height and color. Bring your perennials on Friday, Oct. 1 or before 10 am on Saturday, Oct. 2. Place them to the left of the big garage door so that we won't miss them. But please don't bring them earlier than Friday, because we won't be there to water and care for them.
If, by some chance, we actually seem to be "rained out!" We'll put information on the new building's answering machine that day. Call 848-7660.
Sincerely,
Your Landscaping Committee: Marilyn Chohaney (Lonsdorf),
Sara L'Herault, Dave Watts, Mary K Bishop, and Cari Bass.

We aren't as far along with the building as we'd like but WE ARE MOVING
on Saturday! We are EXCITED! We have a list of about 25 people who have
said they will be there. Let Dee know if you will be coming too. We
will start at 8 AM.
July 20, 2004 --
Things are continuing to move along. The furnaces were delivered today
and the heating should be done in time for the drywaller to work this
weekend. The electrician is putting the lights in the ceiling and there
is hope that the transformer will be set this week yet. Gas should be
in too. We are going to pick out the FREE carpet tomorrow and will have it
installed as soon as the painting is done.
July 15, 2004 --
The VACT Selection Committee is hard at work reading shows under consideration for the
2006 season. There is still time to get involved in this process. All the
scripts will be at the Verona Public Library in a box labeled
"VACT Scripts". You may sign out a script for two days maximum (you don't have
to check it out from the library). The committee will meet again on Monday,
August 9 to narrow the choices down to two plays for Winter, 2006 and two musicals
for Summer, 2006. The selections will be approved by the board and then
submitted to the entire membership at the Annual Meeting in September.

Several of our VACT friends are appearing on stage this month:

One of Shakespeare's classic comedies, produced outside in the beautiful Veterans Park,
the show runs July 16th through the 25th.
Narnia
Wendy Jones (Laurey in Oklahoma!) is playing the White Witch in Oregon
Straw Hat Players production of Narnia based on C. S. Lewis' classic story,
The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe at Oregon High School. The show
opens July 30 and runs through August 7.

Honorable mention: David Woldseth (Eugene Fodor in Crazy For You) is
in charge of ushers for Madison Savoyards Ruddigore, also July 9-18.
The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz in Evansville, but our costumes are appearing
July 23 - 31.
July 7, 2004 --
The VACT annual Selection Committee will be having its first meeting next Monday, July 12 at 7:30
PM at Rich Novotney's. If you wish to be a part of this important process, it requires
approximately a month’s commitment, and the ability and/or willingness to read and/or
watch (or listen to) as many plays as possible.
During this first meeting we will select a "short list" of nominees for two show
slots, Winter and Summer 2006. We
typically chose several possibilities for each show. Please note that this Winter slot
is for a NON-musical. Members who come should bring any ideas they have for possible
shows, and be prepared to pitch your ideas to the members present. Bring any copies of
scripts, videos or recordings you have -- if you are willing to loan them to the committee
for a month. We need loaners! The loan box will be kept at the Verona Public
library. Committee members borrow scripts and such throughout the rest of summer,
reading or watching as much as possible, and returning them in a timely manner so other
members get a chance. We meet again in August to vote on the nominees. We will
recommend two shows for each slot. These finalists will be submitted to the Board of
Directors for approval and then to the membership at the annual meeting in September.
If you need
ideas on the kind of shows we’re looking for, some good guidelines are:
Name recognition of show. Will it draw a crowd?
Cast size: how many women’s roles?
For summer, are there good opportunities for children?
How difficult is it to build the set?
Can we obtain rights for the show?
Is some other local theater group doing the show shortly before we might?
Any questions? Please feel free to give Rich a call at 843-5990 or to drop an
email hadrian1@charter.net.

Stud Walls : Jeff studded the walls for the utility room that didn't get done on the work day. There are still a few walls that need to be put in which he will do.
Interior Doors : Jeff got some free doors with metal frames. He is hauling them over one at a time and installing the frames in the appropriate openings.
Drywall: Jeff has arranged for the drywall and will take care of it. He says they can start next week.(THANKS JEFF FOR EVERYTHING!!)
Plumbing: Now that the walls are done, Benjamin has moved in and hopes to be done tomorrow.
Heating: We got 2 more heating proposals last week and Dick compared (THANKS DICK) them and we chose Dave Jones Heating. They say they will have no trouble finishing by the end of July.
Electrical: The electrician has most of the work done in the enclosed area. But we will have to push him to get the rest done by the end of July. Dick found some possible free light fixtures for the rehearsal and storage area (THANKS DICK).
Electrical Service: Met Alliant and the electrician at the building last week so we that should be moving along now.
Gas Service: Spoken to MG&E and the application for service is complete now.
Parking Lot: Watts Landscape has the parking lot and around the building graded (THANKS DAVID) and we have started to get bids from Paving contractors. Hopefully, they can fit us in before the end of July

Verona Area Community Theater's production of The Curious Savage opens this
Friday, at 7:30 in the Verona Area High School Performing Arts Center. The title may
confuse people into thinking it is another George of the Jungle, but it is a very
different story.
The Savage family children commit their step mother to a mental institution because she
has liquidated the $10 million family assets and is giving it away to people in memory
of her late husband. They hope by placing her in an institution, they can get their hands
on the money. Fortunately, she has it well hidden. The fun begins when Mrs.
Savage sends them out to find the money and the residents of the institution rally to
help in her quest to keep her memorial fund. As Director David Watts says, "The audience
will be rolling in the aisles with laughter in the second act and should be touched to
tears in the third act."
The cast includes some familiar faces, quite a few new ones, and VACT regulars in new
roles. Dale Nickels, who usually sits behind the sound board, plays Samuel Savage and
is hysterical. Dee Baldock and Rick Owens have returned and bring their usual skill
to the performance.
The play will be presented February 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21 at 7:30 PM in the VAHS
Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available at the Verona Public Library on Monday
and Tuesday evenings, by calling 845-2383, or by going to the
