The Story
The playwright turns on the stage lights and prepares for the first reading of his new play.  As the cast and crew assemble, an undercurrent of suspense is evident.  Everyone connected with this show was involved with another play, and exactly a year ago on opening night in this theatre, the leading lady (the playwright’s fiancee) was murdered!  As the read-through begins, startling connections to the murder begin to unfold through flashbacks and reenactments.  Growing tension reaches the boiling point with surprising revelations and accusations, countered by others even more surprising.  The dazzling and logical twists build to a climax and solution that is theatrically stunning!

Characters

Alex Dennison

The main character. Alex is a Broadway playwright, handsome, confident. One year ago, on the opening night of his previous show, his fiancée Monica died in an apparent suicide. After spending a year away in Maine, he has returned to stage a rehearsal for a new play he has written. He has brought all the people involved a year ago to read his new work.

Monica Welles

An actress. A star. Monica is dead. She was engaged to Alex. She was the lead in the production one year ago and died after opening night. For a dead person, she appears quite often in the show. As the events of the previous year are reenacted in flashback and in Alex’ new play, she appears to play herself.

Sally Bean

Sally is Alex’s secretary, young, bright, but naive. She is from Maine and has never been to New York before. She helps Alex stage the play-with-a-play. She also gets coffee.

Lloyd Andrews

The director of the ill-fated production one year ago. He worked closely with Monica during the preparation for that show.

Bella Lamb

The producer. Elegant, expensively dressed. She is a ball of nerves during opening night in the flashback of a year ago.

Karen Daniels

A young actress. We see her as a young actress, an understudy for Monica in the flashback of a year ago. In the present day, she has become more confident and sure of herself.

David Mathews

An actor, a leading man type, tall and handsome, a little smug. He was the leading man in the production a year ago. Has a reputation as a ladies' man

Leo Gibbs

A character actor, a balding comedian. He was involved in the production a year ago. Was married to, now divorced from, Karen.

Man in Auditorium

Who is this mystery man? Why is he lurking in the auditorium?

Minor Roles

Ernie

The stage doorman. Thinks he's the star of the show.

Loretta

The stage manager, efficient and no-nonsense.

Male Police Officer
Female Police Officer

They appear in the reenactment of the scene following Monica’s death.

Mr. Santoro

A small part for a burley man. He is a furniture mover.

Second Man in Auditorium

Another mystery man?
