DIRECTOR'S NOTES
"Warn the world...this peace weapon is even more powerful
that I first thought." - Professor Kokinz
In 1955,
when the book on which this play is based was published, the cold war dominated
the political landscape. The unimaginably powerful hydrogen bomb had just
been exploded for the first time, America was busy building bomb shelters,
and World War III was thought to be just around the corner. A new genre
of books, plays and movies was evolving, all based on the horror of nuclear
holocaust..
By
1963, when this play was written, the world had just seen the Cuban Missile
Crisis, and all-out nuclear war seemed closer than ever. The idea that
nuclear weapons could be used to help secure a peace was in its infancy
and seemed laughably silly to many.
Now,
after 40 years, the cold war is pretty much over. But remarkably, the central
ideas in this comedy are still quite relevant - powerful fusion bombs still
exist (although we have not yet invented the Q-bomb!) The chance of a small
country (or band of terrorists) capturing a nuclear weapon and holding
a large country, or the world, hostage is even more of a concern than before.
And, of course, student protests remain prevalent on college campuses!
Being able to poke fun at a "worst-case scenario" of nuclear terrorism
as presented in "The Mouse That Roared," and to be able to laugh at it,
helps us to all feel better about who we are.
Although
this production does not have the large scope of our last three musicals,
it still has required the energies and talents of many members of VACT.
This has been particularly true because of my woeful inexperience as a
novice director! I would particularly like to thank Marty Roeske, our assistant
director, and Dee Baldock, our producer, for the hours they have spent
and their help telling me what decisions "I" need to make. Finally , all
our families and loved ones who managed without us during the many rehearsals
deserve a special note of thanks.
