DIRECTOR'S NOTES

Notes from Rick...

Watching actors read lines from a book, then put away those books and rehearse as a group, and then, almost mystically, become the play -- what a marvel! I know the feeling as an actor, and when Rusty asked me to share the experience of directing, how could I say no?
Directing is not for the timid; the process of auditioning too many deserving actors for too few available roles was excruciating. Many thanks to all who offered their talents. To the six ladies you see perform today, I offer my appreciation, my admiration, my apology for the inexperience of the directors, and my heartfelt congratulations for a job well done.
This production, the first autumn show for VACT, Inc. is also the first in which we purchased a set from another organization after their staging of the same play. Lucky coincidence of play selection and run dates (and of a supportive, generous production staff at UW-Madison Theatre) allowed us the opportunity to have the wonderful set you see before you. Those who gathered at Mitchell Theatre on Monday evening two weeks ago to load the pieces into the Watts Landscaping Service delivery truck and helped reassemble it on our stage this week are due special thanks. Our own production specialists are unbelievably accomplished and devoted (hats off to Dee, Mark and Dale - where would VACT be without you?) and they added the final luster. Many thanks to all in VACT who volunteer their time and talents.
Lastly, (actually firstly,) I thank my family for their love, tolerance and support. Bill Gates is not the wealthiest man in America!
